Developing through Difficulty – What you need to know about Donald Winnicott
Core Philosophy: Developing Through Difficulty
Donald Winnicott revolutionized child development and psychoanalysis by arguing that perfect parenting is neither possible nor desirable. His central thesis is that psychological resilience and a genuine sense of self emerge not from frictionless care, but from manageable failures within a supportive relationship.
Winnicott observed over 60,000 mother-infant pairs, concluding that small, inevitable disruptions in care force a child to develop internal resources. When a caregiver is slightly delayed or imperfectly attuned, the infant learns to wait, imagine, and self-soothe. These “small failures” are the engine of psychological growth, allowing the child to transition from a state of absolute dependence to independence.
Key Concepts
The “Good-Enough” Mother
Winnicott coined the term “good-enough mother” to describe a caregiver who is initially highly responsive but gradually introduces small, manageable frustrations. This contrasts with the impossible ideal of a “perfect” mother.
- Initial Phase: The mother creates an illusion of omnipotence for the infant, where needs are met so quickly the baby feels they created the satisfaction themselves.
- Gradual Failure: As the child develops, the mother naturally becomes less perfectly attuned. These failures teach the child to tolerate reality without feeling abandoned, fostering frustration tolerance and reality testing.
The Holding Environment
This concept refers to the physical and emotional support provided by the caregiver that protects the infant from “impingements” (overwhelming external stresses).
- Physical Holding: In early infancy, physical contact is the primary way love is communicated.
- Psychological Holding: The caregiver contains the infant’s anxiety and distress, allowing the child to eventually internalize this capacity for self-regulation.
- Therapeutic Application: In therapy, the “holding environment” is the safe, boundaried space where patients can regress and express authentic emotions without fear of retaliation.
Transitional Objects and Phenomena
Winnicott identified the importance of items like a security blanket or teddy bear, calling them “transitional objects.”
- Function: These objects act as a bridge between the infant’s inner world and external reality, representing the mother’s presence when she is absent.
- Intermediate Area: They exist in a “third space” of illusion that is neither fully internal nor fully external. Winnicott argued this same psychological space is where art, religion, and creativity reside throughout adult life.
True Self vs. False Self
- True Self: The spontaneous, creative core of the personality that emerges when a child feels safe and their gestures are met with appropriate responses.
- False Self: A protective mask developed when a caregiver consistently fails to attune to the child’s needs or imposes their own will. The child learns to comply to maintain the relationship, suppressing their authentic impulses. While a mild False Self is necessary for social politeness, a dominant False Self leads to a feeling of unreality or emptiness.
What Does The KJV Bible Say?
Developing through difficulty requires finding the strength to endure, learn, and grow. According to the King James Version (KJV), this involves trusting in God, exercising patience, and recognizing that trials ultimately build resilience. Here are 10 key KJV examples and an analysis of how different personality types experience these principles.
| # | Theme | KJV Scripture | How It Applies to Growth |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Developing Patience | James 1:3-4 | “Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. But let patience have her perfect work…” |
| 2 | Purpose in Pain | Romans 8:28 | “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God…” |
| 3 | Peace in Turmoil | John 16:33 | “…In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.” |
| 4 | Strength in Weakness | 2 Corinthians 12:9 | “…My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness.” |
| 5 | Courage Over Fear | Isaiah 41:10 | “Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God…” |
| 6 | The Valley Experience | Psalm 23:4 | “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me…” |
| 7 | Refined Character | Job 23:10 | “But he knoweth the way that I take: when he hath tried me, I shall come forth as gold.” |
| 8 | Active Endurance | Proverbs 24:10 | “If thou faint in the day of adversity, thy strength is small.” |
| 9 | Hope in Waiting | Isaiah 40:31 | “But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles…” |
| 10 | Comfort and Compassion | 2 Corinthians 1:4 | “Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble…” |
Myers-Briggs Analyst Report: Processing Difficulty
When mapping spiritual and personal growth through difficulty to the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), different personality types process trials, apply scriptural endurance, and develop along unique paths.
The Analysts (INTJ, INTP, ENTJ, ENTP)
- INTJ (The Architect): INTJs view adversity as a complex system to analyze and solve. They look for the systemic lesson (e.g., Job 23:10) and strategize long-term endurance. Their challenge is to not rely solely on their intellect, but to lean into the emotional and spiritual patience required during trials.
- INTP (The Logician): INTPs question the why behind their struggles. They develop best when they can conceptually unpack their circumstances and apply biblical truths about peace and sovereignty (John 16:33). Their growth edge is avoiding over-analysis in favor of active participation in the trial.
- ENTJ (The Commander): ENTJs are action-oriented and may treat difficulties as obstacles to conquer. They utilize verses about courage and power (Isaiah 41:10) to push forward. The specific growth area for an ENTJ is developing empathy and recognizing when to rely on a support system.
- ENTP (The Debater): ENTPs view adversity as a brainstorming opportunity, often exploring multiple perspectives of a problem. They grow by finding the deeper principles behind biblical truths, such as the reframing of circumstances (Romans 8:28). Their developmental task is remaining steadfast when no immediate solution is apparent.
The Diplomats (INFJ, INFP, ENFJ, ENFP)
- INFJ (The Advocate): INFJs process difficulties deeply on an intuitive and emotional level. They search for the hidden meaning and purpose in their pain, leaning heavily into passages like Romans 8:28 and Psalm 23:4. Their challenge is to protect themselves from emotional exhaustion and to accept the comfort offered by others.
- INFP (The Mediator): INFPs seek to align their trials with their core values and personal beliefs. They excel at finding peace in suffering (John 16:33) but may struggle with the practical, day-to-day work of developing patience. Their growth focuses on balancing inward reflection with outward resilience.
- ENFJ (The Protagonist): ENFJs often put others’ needs first, even in their own adversity. They draw heavily on 2 Corinthians 1:4, viewing their current difficulties as a means to ultimately comfort and support their communities. Their developmental task is allowing themselves to be vulnerable and receiving support.
- ENFP (The Campaigner): ENFPs process hardships outwardly and look for the potential for growth and positive change. They grow by maintaining hope and enthusiasm (Isaiah 40:31). Their challenge is staying focused on the slow, unglamorous, day-to-day development of patience.
The Sentinels (ISTJ, ISFJ, ESTJ, ESFJ)
- ISTJ (The Logistician): ISTJs rely on duty, tradition, and practical steps to get through difficulties. They find great comfort in God’s promises of presence (Isaiah 41:10). Their growth area is learning to embrace the unknown and being comfortable when a strict step-by-step plan is not available.
- ISFJ (The Defender): ISFJs are deeply affected by the emotional toll of a trial and may bear burdens quietly. They find strength in God’s quiet comfort and in utilizing their trials to serve others (2 Corinthians 1:4). Their developmental task is to avoid internalizing stress and to practice self-care.
- ESTJ (The Executive): ESTJs manage difficulty by taking charge and establishing logical order. They utilize verses that demand strength and courage (Proverbs 24:10) to organize themselves and their environment. Their growth edge is developing patience for the emotional processing of others who may not approach adversity practically.
- ESFJ (The Consul): ESFJs are community-oriented and look to their support networks when facing adversity. They find comfort in the communal and relational aspects of scripture. Their challenge is to avoid sacrificing their own well-being to keep peace for others, trusting in God’s broader plan.
The Explorers (ISTP, ISFP, ESTP, ESFP)
- ISTP (The Virtuoso): ISTPs are hands-on problem solvers who live in the present. They process difficulties pragmatically, utilizing 2 Corinthians 12:9 to adapt and overcome using whatever resources are available. Their growth area is looking beyond the immediate, physical problem to evaluate the long-term spiritual lesson.
- ISFP (The Adventurer): ISFPs process adversity through their feelings and their connection to their immediate environment. They find peace and resilience by grounding themselves in God’s constant presence (Psalm 23:4). Their developmental task is building a structured routine of endurance rather than relying entirely on fleeting emotions.
- ESTP (The Entrepreneur): ESTPs are spontaneous risk-takers who confront difficulty head-on. They use verses about action and courage to tackle challenges. Their challenge is the slow, deliberate work of James 1:3-4, specifically learning to develop long-term patience instead of seeking quick fixes.
- ESFP (The Entertainer): ESFPs are energetic, people-oriented, and focus on the present moment. They process trials openly and draw heavily on uplifting, community-based scripture to keep their spirits high. Their growth edge is embracing periods of quiet reflection and developing deeper, lasting steadfastness.

This is a major important point about forgiveness
Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift. -MATTHEW 5:24 KJV
Are You Your Own Worst Enemy?
I would start out by saying what Jesus Christ would want us to do? Pray and how should we pray? The Lord’s Prayer, and how often should we pray? Continually. Why do we use the Lord’s Prayer and not some other? The Lord’s Prayer covers all the areas that is important for our spiritual being.
When we pray the Lords prayer we ask to forgive our enemies, let God’s will be done, the kingdom to come. By praying the Lord’s prayer we let go of many thoughts we have in our head and give them back to God so we can have things revealed to us.
We must overcome resentment in our heart, and in a past video I shared about Dr. Jordan Peterson talks about how resentment can destroy us and we become our own very worst enemy and Jordan goes on to say that we must talk to people what we have resentment toward to overcome that resentment. Other people who lived in the past who talked about this is Jesus Christ and someone who is living now who talks about this daily is Brother Augustine, Dr. John MacArthur, Dr. Charles Stanley, Rev. John Piper and Pastor Paul Washer.
Women are looking for a fathers love
Women are looking for a fathers love. Its important that men understand women are looking for a fathers love and not get screwed. Woman more than anything are looking for a strong spiritual man to lead the future (the family). I think in many YouTube videos on biblical teachings, how young women are being hurt by men that are just looking to get laid instead of doing right and being in Christ and setting a good example of a strong man. We must be in Christ, hate no one, love all, forgave theses we resent, love what is right and support people who are walking with God.
Women need their fathers in their lives to be strong man to be good examples and not BETA men or weak examples of what a man should be. Its important that a man leads the way as Christ leads men, we as man need to fellow Jesus Christ to keep society from going to HELL.
Every day you can see or people watch how some men and women our living in hell without the right spiritual order then you will continue your hellish way according to 2 Peter. You can also find it in Romans. God will give you over to a reprobate mind.
And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient. – Romans 1:28 (KJV)
In Romans 1, Paul refers to something known as a reprobate mind. If you’re not familiar with the term reprobate, the literal definition in the Greek is failing to pass the test, unapproved, counterfeit.

Spiritual Order – In The Family and Church
God the father
Jesus Christ
Father (Men over women)
Mother (Women over children)
Here is Book, Chapter and Verse from the Kings James Version 1 Corinthian 11:2-16, But the main message is in 1 Corinthian 11:3: “3 But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God.”

How God Commands Us To Forgive Those Who We Have Resentment Toward.
All of us are tested everyday by our personal internal struggle coming from resentment of what happened earlier in our lives as children typically what our mother did to us, telling how our fathers were not good enough or driving us away from our fathers when we were children. We most go to the people that we have resentment against and forgive them. By forgiving our mothers or whoever we have resentment against, God will forgive us and we can return to the heavenly Father through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
It was said if you don’t love everyone then you love no one. People today live like the Old Testament people did. We must forgive and love everyone as God Commanded us to do according to Matthew 22:34-40.

After Reading The Passage I would Recommend Doing A Silent Prayer
Its is said: Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth. Psalm 46:10 King James Version (KJV)

In a world where it is so easy to forget the importance of God, we must remember that He is holy and will not share His glory. America has forgotten this truth and it is time for us to re-examine our relationship with God and recognize that He is the one true God who deserves our full devotion and reverence. We must remember that He will not be taken lightly or ignored, but rather should be honored as the Creator of all things. Only then can we truly experience His love and grace in our lives.
