Why Orthodox Say This Protestant Doctrine Is Heresy

Why Orthodox Say This Protestant Doctrine Is Heresy

Eastern Orthodox Christians primarily identify the Protestant doctrine of Sola Scriptura (Scripture Alone) as the root heresy that leads to other errors.  Orthodox theology holds that Holy Tradition, comprising Scripture, the decisions of the seven Ecumenical Councils, the writings of the Church Fathers, and liturgical practice, constitutes the single, unified source of divine revelation.  Because the Orthodox Church believes that the Canon of Scripture was only established by the Church through Tradition, they argue that elevating the Bible above the Church’s authoritative interpretation inherently leads to subjective and fragmented understandings of the faith.

The Orthodox perspective defines heresy not merely as a wrong opinion, but as a willful rejection of the historic consensus of the Church, which they view as the guardian of the truth.  Key points of contention include:

  • Authority: The rejection of the Church’s authority to interpret Scripture is seen as a return to the individualism that caused the Reformation, which Orthodox believers view as a departure from the “faith once delivered to the saints.”
  • Novelty: Orthodox tradition teaches that true faith is unchanging; therefore, any doctrine that cannot be shown to have been believed “always, everywhere, and by all” (Vincentian Canon) is considered a heretical innovation.
  • Specific Doctrines: Specific Protestant teachings on salvation, the role of icons, the veneration of saints, and the nature of the Eucharist are often labeled heretical because they contradict the definitions established by the Ecumenical Councils and the continuous practice of the ancient Church.

While some Orthodox sources clarify that not every Protestant is automatically a “heretic” in the formal sense—since formal heresy requires a synodal declaration against a person who knowingly refuses correction—they maintain that Protestantism as a system operates outside the boundaries of Orthodox Orthodoxy.  The underlying cause of these deviations is often attributed to pride, where human reason is placed above the collective wisdom and authority of the Church Fathers and Councils.

What Does The KJV Bible Say?

In Eastern Orthodox theology, heresy is not merely a difference of opinion but a rejection of essential truths defined by the Church through Scripture and Holy Tradition.  The Orthodox Church sees itself as the continuation of the early Church, preserving apostolic faith without alteration.

Heresy arises when individuals or groups depart from the consensus of the Church, especially as defined by the Seven Ecumenical Councils.  The Orthodox do not view Protestantism as a mere reform but as a break from apostolic continuity

Key Protestant Doctrines Considered Heretical

The Orthodox Church identifies several Protestant teachings as heretical or at least heterodox (holding other teachings), particularly those that emerged from the Reformation.  These include:

  • Sola Scriptura (Scripture alone)
  • Justification by faith alone
  • Rejection of sacred tradition
  • Denial of the real presence in the Eucharist
  • Rejection of apostolic succession
  • Iconoclasm or rejection of icons
  • Denial of the intercession of saints
  • Private interpretation of Scripture
  • Reduction of sacraments to two
  • Rejection of the veneration of the Theotokos (Mary)

Most Orthodox theologians classify Protestants as heterodox rather than heretics, meaning they hold incorrect teachings but are often invincibly ignorant of the full truth.

Orthodox View on Scripture and Tradition

The Orthodox Church holds that Scripture and Holy Tradition are inseparable.  Tradition includes the teachings of the Church Fathers, the Ecumenical Councils, liturgical worship, and the lived experience of the Church.

Protestant Sola Scriptura is seen as a novelty and a rejection of how the early Church functioned.  The Orthodox argue that the Bible itself emerged from Tradition, not the other way around.

As 2 Thessalonians 2:15 (KJV) states:

“Therefore, brethren, stand fast, and hold the traditions which ye have been taught, whether by word, or our epistle.”

This verse is central to the Orthodox argument that apostolic teaching was not limited to writing

The Role of Church Authority

The Orthodox Church believes that Christ established a visible Church with authority to teach and govern.  This authority is passed down through apostolic succession—a continuous line of bishops from the apostles.

Protestantism, having broken from this succession, is seen as lacking ecclesial authority to define doctrine.  Without a magisterium, the Orthodox argue, everyone becomes their own pope, leading to endless divisions.

Matthew 16:18 (KJV):

“And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.”

This promise, Orthodox believe, applies to the Church as a whole, not individual believers.

Salvation: Faith, Works, and Theosis

Orthodox soteriology centers on theosis—the process of becoming by grace what God is by nature. Salvation is not a legal declaration but union with God through Christ.

Protestant justification by faith alone is rejected as incomplete.  The Orthodox emphasize James 2:24 (KJV):

“Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only.”

Faith without works is dead, and salvation involves synergy—cooperation between divine grace and human will.

Sacraments and the Eucharist

The Orthodox Church recognizes seven sacraments, while most Protestants recognize only two (baptism and communion).  More critically, the Orthodox believe in the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist.

Protestant views ranging from symbolic memorialism to spiritual presence are seen as denying the mystery of the Eucharist.

John 6:53–54 (KJV):

“Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you.”

This is interpreted literally in Orthodoxy, not symbolically.

Apostolic Succession and Church Structure

The Orthodox Church maintains that valid sacraments require ordained clergy in apostolic succession.  Protestant ministers, lacking this lineage, are not recognized as validly ordained.

This affects the validity of sacraments like baptism and Eucharist in Protestant communities.

1 Timothy 4:14 (KJV):

“Neglect not the gift that is in thee, which was given thee by prophecy, with the laying on of the hands of the presbytery.”

The laying on of hands is seen as essential for transmitting apostolic authority.

Icons and Veneration

Many Protestant groups reject icons as idolatry. The Orthodox, however, distinguish between worship (latria) due to God alone and veneration (dulia) given to saints and icons.

Exodus 20:4–5 (KJV) is often cited by Protestants against icons, but Orthodox point to God’s command to make images (e.g., cherubim in Exodus 25:18–20).

The veneration of icons was affirmed at the Seventh Ecumenical Council (787 AD)

Orthodox Christians often view key Protestant doctrines as heresy because they are seen as novelties that depart from the historic Apostolic Tradition maintained by the Church since the first century. While Orthodoxy respects the Protestant desire to follow the Bible, they argue these doctrines take scriptures out of context, reject the authority of the early Church Councils, and create thousands of divisions.

10 Examples of Protestant Doctrines Viewed as Heresy (KJV)

Doctrine/TenetOrthodox ViewKJV Scriptural Refutation
1Sola Scriptura (Bible Alone)The Bible is not the sole authority; it was produced and canonized by the Church, which includes Holy Tradition.2 Thess 2:15 “Therefore, brethren, stand fast, and hold the traditions which ye have been taught, whether by word, or our epistle.”
2Sola Fide (Faith Alone)Salvation is not through faith alone, but faith working through love/good works.James 2:24 “Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only.”
3Once Saved, Always SavedSalvation can be lost through sin; perseverance in grace is required.Ezekiel 33:12 “…The righteousness of the righteous shall not deliver him in the day of his transgression…”
4Rejection of Sacramental BaptismBaptism is not just an outward sign, but the actual, necessary “washing of regeneration” and death to sin.John 3:5 “…Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.”
5Iconoclasm (No Icons)Rejection of icons is heresy (Seventh Ecumenical Council). Veneration is not worship.Exodus 25:18-20 (God commands making Cherubims for the Mercy Seat).
6“Theosis” Rejection (Becoming like God)Theosis (union with God) is the goal of Christian life, not just legal forgiveness.2 Peter 1:4 “…that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature…”
7Invisble Church OnlyThe Church is the living, visible, hierarchical Body of Christ on earth, not just a spiritual idea.Matthew 16:18 “…upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.”
8Rejection of Apostolic SuccessionRejects the bishops and the laying on of hands that connects directly to the Apostles.2 Tim 1:6 “…stir up the gift of God, which is in thee by the putting on of my hands.”
9Denial of Saints’ IntercessionRejects asking saints in heaven to pray for us, viewing them as “dead”.Rev 5:8 “…four and twenty elders fell down before the Lamb, having… odours, which are the prayers of saints.”
10“Reformed” Theology/PredestinationRejects that God predestines some to hell; emphasizes human free will and cooperation (synergy) with grace.1 Tim 2:4 “Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.”

Why Orthodox Consider These “Heresy”

  • Departure from Tradition: Heresy is defined as a “choice” to break away from the established, ancestral teaching of the Church.
  • Fruit of Division: Orthodox point to the rapid splintering of Protestantism (20,000+ groups) as proof that Sola Scriptura is a “bad tree” bearing bad fruit, departing from unity.
  • Misinterpretation of “Faith”: The Orthodox view Sola Fide as dangerous because it separates faith from the life of virtue and love, which are necessary for salvation.
  • The Church as “Pillar of Truth”: The Bible calls the Church (not the Bible alone) the pillar and ground of truth (1 Timothy 3:15), meaning the Church’s tradition interprets the Bible correctly.

This is a major important point about forgiveness

Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift. -MATTHEW 5:24 KJV

Are You Your Own Worst Enemy?

I would start out by saying what Jesus Christ would want us to do? Pray and how should we pray? The Lord’s Prayer, and how often should we pray? Continually. Why do we use the Lord’s Prayer and not some other? The Lord’s Prayer covers all the areas that is important for our spiritual being.

When we pray the Lords prayer we ask to forgive our enemies, let God’s will be done, the kingdom to come. By praying the Lord’s prayer we let go of many thoughts we have in our head and give them back to God so we can have things revealed to us.

We must overcome resentment in our heart, and in a past video I shared about Dr. Jordan Peterson talks about how resentment can destroy us and we become our own very worst enemy and Jordan goes on to say that we must talk to people what we have resentment toward to overcome that resentment. Other people who lived in the past who talked about this is Jesus Christ and someone who is living now who talks about this daily is Brother Augustine, Dr. John MacArthur, Dr. Charles Stanley, Rev. John Piper and Pastor Paul Washer.

Women are looking for a fathers love

Women are looking for a fathers love. Its important that men understand women are looking for a fathers love and not get screwed. Woman more than anything are looking for a strong spiritual man to lead the future (the family). I think in many YouTube videos on biblical teachings, how young women are being hurt by men that are just looking to get laid instead of doing right and being in Christ and setting a good example of a strong man. We must be in Christ, hate no one, love all, forgave theses we resent, love what is right and support people who are walking with God.

Women need their fathers in their lives to be strong man to be good examples and not BETA men or weak examples of what a man should be. Its important that a man leads the way as Christ leads men, we as man need to fellow Jesus Christ to keep society from going to HELL.

Every day you can see or people watch how some men and women our living in hell without the right spiritual order then you will continue your hellish way according to 2 Peter. You can also find it in Romans. God will give you over to a reprobate mind.

And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient. – Romans 1:28 (KJV)

In Romans 1, Paul refers to something known as a reprobate mind. If you’re not familiar with the term reprobate, the literal definition in the Greek is failing to pass the test, unapproved, counterfeit.

How God Commands Us To Forgive Those Who We Have Resentment Toward.

All of us are tested everyday by our personal internal struggle coming from resentment of what happened earlier in our lives as children typically what our mother did to us, telling how our fathers were not good enough or driving us away from our fathers when we were children. We most go to the people that we have resentment against and forgive them. By forgiving our mothers or whoever we have resentment against, God will forgive us and we can return to the heavenly Father through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

It was said if you don’t love everyone then you love no one. People today live like the Old Testament people did. We must forgive and love everyone as God Commanded us to do according to Matthew 22:34-40.

In a world where it is so easy to forget the importance of God, we must remember that He is holy and will not share His glory. America has forgotten this truth and it is time for us to re-examine our relationship with God and recognize that He is the one true God who deserves our full devotion and reverence. We must remember that He will not be taken lightly or ignored, but rather should be honored as the Creator of all things. Only then can we truly experience His love and grace in our lives.
