Do These Bible Arguments Really Support Women Pastors?

Do These Bible Arguments Really Support Women Pastors?

The question of whether biblical arguments support women serving as pastors hinges on interpretation of key passages and theological frameworks.

1 Timothy 2:11–14 is central to the argument against women pastors.  This passage states, “I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man; she must be silent.” Proponents interpret this as a timeless, divinely ordained restriction on women holding pastoral authority over men, citing the order of creation (Adam first, then Eve) and the deception of Eve as foundational reasons. This view is upheld by denominations like the Southern Baptist Convention and is supported by scholars who argue the passage reflects a consistent biblical pattern of male leadership in the church.

Galatians 3:28—”There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus”—is frequently cited by those supporting women pastors.  However, critics argue this verse addresses salvation and spiritual equality, not church office or leadership roles.  As noted in multiple sources, it does not override clear passages on church order (e.g., 1 Timothy 3:1–13, Titus 1:6–9) that specify male elders and pastors.

Other arguments include:

  • Priscilla and Aquila teaching Apollos privately (Acts 18:26), which some see as evidence of women in teaching roles—but the context is private, not public or authoritative.
  • Phoebe being called a deacon (diakonos) in Romans 16:1, but the term refers to service, not office, and there is no indication she had authority over men.
  • Junia (Romans 16:7) being described as an apostle—though the name is ambiguous in Greek and may be masculine, and even if female, apostleship in the New Testament context differs from modern pastoral roles.

Conclusion: While the Bible affirms women’s vital roles in ministry—prophesying, teaching other women, serving as deacons, and supporting church leaders—the primary biblical arguments used to support women as pastors are contested.  The most consistent interpretation across many conservative and traditional Christian traditions holds that 1 Timothy 2:12 and related passages restrict women from holding pastoral authority over men, while others interpret these passages as culturally bound or contextually limited.  Ultimately, the debate reflects differing hermeneutical approaches to Scripture.

What does ‘silence’ in 1 Timothy 2:12 actually mean?

The word translated as “silence” in 1 Timothy 2:12 is the Greek ἡσυχίᾳ (hēsuchia), which more accurately conveys “quietness” or “calmness” rather than absolute silence.  It refers to a peaceful, orderly demeanor—“keeping one’s seat”—rather than a complete prohibition on speech.

This term appears three times in 1 Timothy 2 (verses 1, 11, and 12), emphasizing a general call for tranquility and respectful conduct in worship.  In verse 11, women are instructed to learn “in quietness (hēsuchia) and full submission,” indicating that the same standard of calm, receptive behavior applies to learning, not just to speaking.

Scholars note that if Paul had intended to command total silence, he would have used a different Greek word, such as σιγάω (sigao), which means “to hold one’s peace” or “to cease speaking” (used in 1 Corinthians 14:34).  Instead, hēsuchia suggests a disposition of humility and order, not the suppression of all speech.

Therefore, the “silence” in 1 Timothy 2:12 is best understood as a call for quiet submission and respectful conduct, particularly in the context of learning and avoiding domineering or disruptive behavior in the church.

What Does The KJV Bible Say?

Mike Winger, a prominent Bible teacher, has produced an exhaustive 14-part video series (over 40 hours) titled “Women in Ministry” in which he argues from a complementarian perspective that the Bible prohibits women from holding the specific office of pastor or elder and from teaching with authority in a corporate church gathering.

Winger’s core position is built on three “pillars”: male headship in marriage, the restriction of elder positions to men, and the equal status of men and women as image-bearers of God.

Key Scriptural Arguments (KJV)

Below are the primary verses Winger uses to support his stance, presented according to the

King James Version (KJV):

Verse (KJV) Winger’s Argument / InterpretationContext & Key Phrase
1 Timothy 2:12Prohibits women from the office of pastor/elder and from the public teaching of doctrine to men.“But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence.”
1 Timothy 3:2Requirements for a “bishop” (overseer/pastor) include being the “husband of one wife,” which Winger views as a male-specific qualification.“A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife…”
1 Corinthians 14:34Interpreted as a command for women to maintain order and not cause disturbances in the gathered assembly.“Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak…”
Genesis 2:18-22Winger argues male headship is a “creation principle” established before the Fall, based on Adam being created first.“And the Lord God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him.”

What Winger Believes Women Can Do

Despite his restrictions on the office of pastor, Winger is not a “patriarchalist” and acknowledges that God gives spiritual gifts of teaching and leadership to women. He supports women:

  • Teaching other women and children: Based on Titus 2:3-5.
  • Private instruction: He points to Priscilla (Acts 18:26) as an example of a woman accurately explaining the way of God to a man (Apollos) in a non-corporate setting.
  • Prophesying and Praying: Acknowledging women’s active participation in 1 Corinthians 11.

Common Counter-Arguments (Egalitarian View)

Critics, such as Terran Williams, argue that Winger misinterprets the Greek word authentein (translated as “usurp authority” in the KJV) and that verses like Galatians 3:28 (“There is neither male nor female… for ye are all one in Christ Jesus”) should override these role distinctions.

This is a major important point about forgiveness

Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift. -MATTHEW 5:24 KJV

Are You Your Own Worst Enemy?

I would start out by saying what Jesus Christ would want us to do? Pray and how should we pray? The Lord’s Prayer, and how often should we pray? Continually. Why do we use the Lord’s Prayer and not some other? The Lord’s Prayer covers all the areas that is important for our spiritual being.

When we pray the Lords prayer we ask to forgive our enemies, let God’s will be done, the kingdom to come. By praying the Lord’s prayer we let go of many thoughts we have in our head and give them back to God so we can have things revealed to us.

We must overcome resentment in our heart, and in a past video I shared about Dr. Jordan Peterson talks about how resentment can destroy us and we become our own very worst enemy and Jordan goes on to say that we must talk to people what we have resentment toward to overcome that resentment. Other people who lived in the past who talked about this is Jesus Christ and someone who is living now who talks about this daily is Brother Augustine, Dr. John MacArthur, Dr. Charles Stanley, Rev. John Piper and Pastor Paul Washer.

Women are looking for a fathers love

Women are looking for a fathers love. Its important that men understand women are looking for a fathers love and not get screwed. Woman more than anything are looking for a strong spiritual man to lead the future (the family). I think in many YouTube videos on biblical teachings, how young women are being hurt by men that are just looking to get laid instead of doing right and being in Christ and setting a good example of a strong man. We must be in Christ, hate no one, love all, forgave theses we resent, love what is right and support people who are walking with God.

Women need their fathers in their lives to be strong man to be good examples and not BETA men or weak examples of what a man should be. Its important that a man leads the way as Christ leads men, we as man need to fellow Jesus Christ to keep society from going to HELL.

Every day you can see or people watch how some men and women our living in hell without the right spiritual order then you will continue your hellish way according to 2 Peter. You can also find it in Romans. God will give you over to a reprobate mind.

And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient. – Romans 1:28 (KJV)

In Romans 1, Paul refers to something known as a reprobate mind. If you’re not familiar with the term reprobate, the literal definition in the Greek is failing to pass the test, unapproved, counterfeit.

How God Commands Us To Forgive Those Who We Have Resentment Toward.

All of us are tested everyday by our personal internal struggle coming from resentment of what happened earlier in our lives as children typically what our mother did to us, telling how our fathers were not good enough or driving us away from our fathers when we were children. We most go to the people that we have resentment against and forgive them. By forgiving our mothers or whoever we have resentment against, God will forgive us and we can return to the heavenly Father through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

It was said if you don’t love everyone then you love no one. People today live like the Old Testament people did. We must forgive and love everyone as God Commanded us to do according to Matthew 22:34-40.

In a world where it is so easy to forget the importance of God, we must remember that He is holy and will not share His glory. America has forgotten this truth and it is time for us to re-examine our relationship with God and recognize that He is the one true God who deserves our full devotion and reverence. We must remember that He will not be taken lightly or ignored, but rather should be honored as the Creator of all things. Only then can we truly experience His love and grace in our lives.
