Michael Heiser critiques the “church-age” long doctrine of Original Sin

Michael Heiser critiques the “church-age” long doctrine of Original Sin

Dr. Michael Heiser challenges the traditional Christian doctrine of original sin—the belief that all humans inherit Adam’s guilt and moral corruption due to his disobedience in Eden. He argues that this doctrine, largely shaped by Augustine and later church tradition, misinterprets key biblical passages, especially Romans 5:12. According to Heiser, the verse emphasizes the spread of death to all humanity because all sinned, not that Adam’s guilt is imputed to every person at birth.

Heiser contends that the Bible never states that guilt is inherited, only that death entered the world through Adam’s sin. He emphasizes that moral guilt arises from personal sin, not ancestral transgression. This view has significant implications, especially regarding the fate of infants and the unborn who die before committing conscious sin. Heiser asserts they are not guilty before God and therefore can be assured of salvation through Christ’s resurrection, not because of exceptions or divine leniency, but because they lack personal guilt.

Theological Implications and Challenges

One of Heiser’s central concerns is the logical and theological inconsistency in affirming both the full humanity of Jesus and the traditional doctrine of original sin. If all humans inherit Adam’s guilt through natural descent, then Jesus—being fully human and genealogically linked to Adam—should also inherit that guilt. Traditional solutions, such as attributing sin transmission solely through the male line or relying on the virgin birth, are, in Heiser’s view, biblically unsupported contrivances.

He also critiques the idea of federal headship, where Adam acts as humanity’s representative, arguing that this framework creates more problems than it solves, especially when applied to Christology. Instead, Heiser proposes a view rooted in ancient Near Eastern context, where death—not guilt—is the inherited consequence of Adam’s fall. This reframing avoids the pastoral and doctrinal difficulties associated with condemning infants and maintains the necessity of Christ’s atonement for actual sin.

Alternative Interpretations and Reception

Heiser’s view aligns more closely with certain strands of Eastern Christian thought and has been compared—sometimes critically—to Pelagianism, which denies inherited sinfulness. Critics argue that rejecting imputed guilt undermines key doctrines like substitutionary atonement and the necessity of infant baptism. However, Heiser maintains that his position is biblically faithful, emphasizing personal responsibility for sin while upholding the universality of death as the consequence of the Fall.

His approach invites a re-examination of Romans 5 and related passages in light of Second Temple Jewish theology, where the focus was more on mortality than inherited guilt. This perspective has sparked debate, particularly among Reformed and traditional evangelical circles, but also offers a compelling alternative for those troubled by the pastoral implications of traditional original sin doctrine.

What Does The KJV Bible Say?

Based on the work of the late Dr. Michael Heiser, particularly his blog series on Romans 5:12, he argued that the “church-age” long doctrine of Original Sin—specifically, the idea that humans inherit the guilt of Adam’s sin—is a man-made, Augustinian tradition rather than a clear biblical teaching. Heiser maintained that what humanity inherited from Adam was mortality (physical death) and a sinful environment, not inherited guilt.

Heiser’s Critique of Original Sin

  • Definition of the Problem: Heiser argues that the traditional view (Augustinian/Calvinist) that everyone is born guilty of Adam’s sin is not found in the Old Testament or the Gospels.
  • Romans 5:12 Re-interpreted: Heiser challenges the translation “because all sinned” as meaning all sinned in Adam, proposing instead that death spread because all sinned individually.
  • The “Jesus Dilemma”: Heiser argues that if all humans are born with inherited guilt, then Jesus, being human, must have been born with inherited guilt.
  • Old Testament Witness: Heiser highlights that the Old Testament teaches individual responsibility for sin, not corporate guilt for Adam.

Key Scripture Comparison (KJV Focused)

Heiser argued that the Old Testament specifically contradicts the idea that children are held accountable for the sins of their parents (and by extension, Adam).

Bible Passage (KJV) Traditional “Original Sin” InterpretationMichael Heiser’s Position
Romans 5:12“…death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned.” (Interpreted as: All sinned in Adam, therefore all are born guilty).“…death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned.” (Interpreted as: Death, the consequence of Adam’s sin, passed to all, and all men consequently die because they personally sin).
Ezekiel 18:20“The soul that sinneth, it shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father…” (Often seen as secondary to the Fall).Direct contradiction to inherited guilt. God explicitly states that children do not inherit the guilt of their parents.
Jeremiah 31:29-30“In those days they shall say no more, The fathers have eaten a sour grape, and the children’s teeth are set on edge.” (Viewed as a New Covenant change).God declares that in all times, everyone dies for their own iniquity, not Adam’s.
Psalm 51:5“Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me.” (Used to support inherited depravity). Not a declaration of inherent, inherited guilt, but a poetic description of being born into a sinful world.
Hebrews 2:17“…he [Jesus] had to be made like his brothers in every respect…” (If all are born sinful, Jesus was too).Jesus was made like us in humanity (mortal), but did not inherit the legal guilt of Adam.

Summary of Heiser’s Position

  1. Mortality, not Guilt: Humans inherit mortality (death) from Adam, which leads to a “death-directed” life, not inherited guilt.
  2. Personal Guilt: People are guilty before God only for their own sins.
  3. No “Sin Nature” at Birth: Heiser rejected the idea that children are born “guilty” or “damned” simply by existing.
  4. The “Why” of Mortality: Adam’s sin removed humanity from the source of immortality (the Tree of Life), meaning we now face mortality and are prone to sin because of the broken, fallen world.

This is a major important point about forgiveness

Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift. -MATTHEW 5:24 KJV

Are You Your Own Worst Enemy?

I would start out by saying what Jesus Christ would want us to do? Pray and how should we pray? The Lord’s Prayer, and how often should we pray? Continually. Why do we use the Lord’s Prayer and not some other? The Lord’s Prayer covers all the areas that is important for our spiritual being.

When we pray the Lords prayer we ask to forgive our enemies, let God’s will be done, the kingdom to come. By praying the Lord’s prayer we let go of many thoughts we have in our head and give them back to God so we can have things revealed to us.

We must overcome resentment in our heart, and in a past video I shared about Dr. Jordan Peterson talks about how resentment can destroy us and we become our own very worst enemy and Jordan goes on to say that we must talk to people what we have resentment toward to overcome that resentment. Other people who lived in the past who talked about this is Jesus Christ and someone who is living now who talks about this daily is Brother Augustine, Dr. John MacArthur, Dr. Charles Stanley, Rev. John Piper and Pastor Paul Washer.

Women are looking for a fathers love

Women are looking for a fathers love. Its important that men understand women are looking for a fathers love and not get screwed. Woman more than anything are looking for a strong spiritual man to lead the future (the family). I think in many YouTube videos on biblical teachings, how young women are being hurt by men that are just looking to get laid instead of doing right and being in Christ and setting a good example of a strong man. We must be in Christ, hate no one, love all, forgave theses we resent, love what is right and support people who are walking with God.

Women need their fathers in their lives to be strong man to be good examples and not BETA men or weak examples of what a man should be. Its important that a man leads the way as Christ leads men, we as man need to fellow Jesus Christ to keep society from going to HELL.

Every day you can see or people watch how some men and women our living in hell without the right spiritual order then you will continue your hellish way according to 2 Peter. You can also find it in Romans. God will give you over to a reprobate mind.

And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient. – Romans 1:28 (KJV)

In Romans 1, Paul refers to something known as a reprobate mind. If you’re not familiar with the term reprobate, the literal definition in the Greek is failing to pass the test, unapproved, counterfeit.

How God Commands Us To Forgive Those Who We Have Resentment Toward.

All of us are tested everyday by our personal internal struggle coming from resentment of what happened earlier in our lives as children typically what our mother did to us, telling how our fathers were not good enough or driving us away from our fathers when we were children. We most go to the people that we have resentment against and forgive them. By forgiving our mothers or whoever we have resentment against, God will forgive us and we can return to the heavenly Father through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

It was said if you don’t love everyone then you love no one. People today live like the Old Testament people did. We must forgive and love everyone as God Commanded us to do according to Matthew 22:34-40.

In a world where it is so easy to forget the importance of God, we must remember that He is holy and will not share His glory. America has forgotten this truth and it is time for us to re-examine our relationship with God and recognize that He is the one true God who deserves our full devotion and reverence. We must remember that He will not be taken lightly or ignored, but rather should be honored as the Creator of all things. Only then can we truly experience His love and grace in our lives.
