Pastor Mark Answers Toughest Marriage Questions

Pastor Mark Answers Toughest Marriage Questions

Pastor Mark Driscoll is widely known for tackling difficult and often avoided topics in Christian marriage with biblical honesty and real-world relevance. Through live Q&A sessions, books, and sermons, he addresses pressing concerns couples face, especially around communication, intimacy, leadership, and spiritual growth in marriage.

Key Themes in Pastor Mark’s Marriage Teachings

Driscoll emphasizes that marriage is a covenant designed by God not primarily for happiness, but for holiness. His teachings often explore:

  • Biblical roles in marriage, including headship, submission, and servant leadership.
  • Sexuality in marriage, addressing questions about intimacy, pornography, and “can we do that?” scenarios with candor.
  • Conflict and forgiveness, offering practical guidance on reconciliation and maintaining unity.
  • Spiritual intimacy, encouraging couples to grow together in their relationship with Christ.

These themes are central to his book Real Marriage: The Truth About Sex, Friendship & Life Together, co-authored with his wife Grace, which sparked widespread discussion in evangelical circles.

What Does The KJV Bible Say?

Pastor Mark Driscoll often addresses the “toughest marriage questions” by anchoring them in the King James Version (KJV) and other biblical translations, emphasizing God’s design for marriage as a covenant. In his “Real Marriage” series and various live Q&As, he focuses on practical issues like intimacy, leadership, and past trauma.

Below are 10 examples of tough marriage questions addressed by Pastor Mark, with corresponding KJV verses and his key takeaways.

Pastor Mark’s 10 Toughest Marriage Questions & KJV Verses

Question KJV Bible VersePastor Mark’s Key Takeaway
1. How do we deal with past sexual sin?1 Corinthians 6:11: “And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified…”Past sin creates shame; healing requires repenting together and moving forward with a “clean slate” through Christ.
2. Is divorce and remarriage okay?Mark 10:9: “What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.”Marriage is a permanent covenant in God’s eyes; remarriage after divorce is generally viewed as adultery unless specific biblical exceptions apply.
3. Who should lead the home?Genesis 3:16: “…and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee.”Men must reject “Ahab-like” passivity and lead their families with love, dominance, and a clear expectation of respect.
4. What if my parents interfere?Genesis 2:24: “Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife…”You cannot “cleave” until you “leave.” Prioritizing original family over your spouse causes long-term marital damage.
5. How often should we have sex?1 Corinthians 7:5: “Defraud ye not one the other, except it be with consent for a time…”Intimacy is a gift; couples should not deprive each other. Frequent intimacy helps prevent temptation and builds unity.
6. What if my husband won’t work?1 Timothy 5:8: “But if any provide not for his own… he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel.”A Christian man who does not work to provide for his wife and children is behaving worse than a non-believer.
7. How do we handle bitterness?Ephesians 4:31: “Let all bitterness… be put away from you… with all malice.”Bitterness is a “root” that defiles a marriage; it often stems from unmet expectations and requires grace to resolve.
8. Can a marriage survive adultery?Matthew 19:9: “…except it be for fornication… whoso marrieth her… doth commit adultery.”While adultery is grounds for divorce, forgiveness is possible through radical humility, repentance, and hard work.
9. Why is marriage so hard?Proverbs 27:17: “Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend.”Marriage is a sanctifying “mirror” that reflects your own selfishness; it is designed to make you more like Christ.
10. Will we be married in heaven?Mark 12:25: “…when they shall rise from the dead, they neither marry, nor are given in marriage…”There is no marriage in heaven because the earthly “shadow” of marriage gives way to the “reality” of Christ and the Church.

Pastor Mark’s “4 Laws of Marriage” or his advice on overcoming intimacy obstacles

Pastor Mark Driscoll often references the “4 Laws of Marriage” (originally popularized by Jimmy Evans and frequently taught by Driscoll) to provide a biblical framework for a healthy covenant. He also offers specific strategies for overcoming intimacy obstacles, often focusing on what the Bible calls “little foxes” that ruin the vineyard.

The 4 Laws of Marriage

These laws are drawn from the foundational marriage text in Genesis 2:24-25 (KJV).

  • The Law of Priority: “Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother…”
    • Meaning: Your spouse must become your highest earthly priority, even above your parents and children. Driscoll emphasizes that you cannot “cleave” until you first “leave”.
  • The Law of Pursuit: “…and shall cleave unto his wife…”
    • Meaning: Cleaving means to “adhere firmly” or pursue with energy. Driscoll teaches that men must never stop “dating” their wives; pursuit doesn’t end at the wedding.
  • The Law of Partnership: “…and they shall be one flesh.”
    • Meaning: This is total oneness—sharing ownership of time, money, bodies, and future plans. It is a shift from independence to interdependence.
  • The Law of Purity: “And they were both naked… and were not ashamed.”
    • Meaning: This requires absolute transparency. Intimacy is only possible in an atmosphere of purity where there is no hiding, no secrets, and no shame.

Overcoming Intimacy Obstacles

In his Real Romance series based on the Song of Solomon, Pastor Mark identifies several “foxes” that can destroy marital intimacy.

  • Catch the “Little Foxes”: Referring to Song of Solomon 2:15 (KJV) (“Take us the foxes, the little foxes, that spoil the vines”), Driscoll notes that intimacy is rarely killed by one big event, but by small, persistent issues like unresolved bitterness or nagging.
  • The Digital Distraction: He identifies phones as the greatest modern obstacle to intimacy. He advises couples to put technology away to allow for “face-to-face” connection and active listening.
  • Move from Flirting to Fighting FOR the Marriage: He teaches that when conflict arises, couples should fight for the marriage rather than with each other.
  • Ask “Is It Helpful?”: Beyond just asking if something is “sinful,” Driscoll suggests couples ask if a specific action or habit is “helpful” for their unique relationship and if it pulls them together or pushes them apart.

This is a major important point about forgiveness

Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift. -MATTHEW 5:24 KJV

Are You Your Own Worst Enemy?

I would start out by saying what Jesus Christ would want us to do? Pray and how should we pray? The Lord’s Prayer, and how often should we pray? Continually. Why do we use the Lord’s Prayer and not some other? The Lord’s Prayer covers all the areas that is important for our spiritual being.

When we pray the Lords prayer we ask to forgive our enemies, let God’s will be done, the kingdom to come. By praying the Lord’s prayer we let go of many thoughts we have in our head and give them back to God so we can have things revealed to us.

We must overcome resentment in our heart, and in a past video I shared about Dr. Jordan Peterson talks about how resentment can destroy us and we become our own very worst enemy and Jordan goes on to say that we must talk to people what we have resentment toward to overcome that resentment. Other people who lived in the past who talked about this is Jesus Christ and someone who is living now who talks about this daily is Brother Augustine, Dr. John MacArthur, Dr. Charles Stanley, Rev. John Piper and Pastor Paul Washer.

Women are looking for a fathers love

Women are looking for a fathers love. Its important that men understand women are looking for a fathers love and not get screwed. Woman more than anything are looking for a strong spiritual man to lead the future (the family). I think in many YouTube videos on biblical teachings, how young women are being hurt by men that are just looking to get laid instead of doing right and being in Christ and setting a good example of a strong man. We must be in Christ, hate no one, love all, forgave theses we resent, love what is right and support people who are walking with God.

Women need their fathers in their lives to be strong man to be good examples and not BETA men or weak examples of what a man should be. Its important that a man leads the way as Christ leads men, we as man need to fellow Jesus Christ to keep society from going to HELL.

Every day you can see or people watch how some men and women our living in hell without the right spiritual order then you will continue your hellish way according to 2 Peter. You can also find it in Romans. God will give you over to a reprobate mind.

And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient. – Romans 1:28 (KJV)

In Romans 1, Paul refers to something known as a reprobate mind. If you’re not familiar with the term reprobate, the literal definition in the Greek is failing to pass the test, unapproved, counterfeit.

How God Commands Us To Forgive Those Who We Have Resentment Toward.

All of us are tested everyday by our personal internal struggle coming from resentment of what happened earlier in our lives as children typically what our mother did to us, telling how our fathers were not good enough or driving us away from our fathers when we were children. We most go to the people that we have resentment against and forgive them. By forgiving our mothers or whoever we have resentment against, God will forgive us and we can return to the heavenly Father through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

It was said if you don’t love everyone then you love no one. People today live like the Old Testament people did. We must forgive and love everyone as God Commanded us to do according to Matthew 22:34-40.

In a world where it is so easy to forget the importance of God, we must remember that He is holy and will not share His glory. America has forgotten this truth and it is time for us to re-examine our relationship with God and recognize that He is the one true God who deserves our full devotion and reverence. We must remember that He will not be taken lightly or ignored, but rather should be honored as the Creator of all things. Only then can we truly experience His love and grace in our lives.
