How the Economy Worked in the Time of Jesus

How the Economy Worked in the Time of Jesus

In 2026, historians and theologians emphasize that the economy of Jesus’ era was a complex agrarian system defined by sharp social stratification, heavy taxation, and a mix of local and imperial influences.

The primary pillars of the economy included:

  • Agricultural Foundation: Most of the population lived in small farming villages. Lower Galilee featured rich soil for various crops, though many workers were tenant farmers on Roman-controlled land.
  • Dual Taxation: People faced a heavy “tremendous tax burden” from two sources: the Roman Government and a religious tax for the Jerusalem temple. Tax collectors, known as publicans, were often corrupt and despised for their practices.
  • Urban Trade and Industry: While agrarian at its core, cities like Sepphoris had sophisticated markets with stalls selling diverse products and industries that elevated the local standard of living.
  • Currency and Barter: A diverse monetary system existed, including Syrian, Roman, and Jewish coins. The shekel was a vital standard of weight for precious metals used to ensure fair trade.
  • Debt and Inequality: The era was marked by high levels of economic inequality. Many individuals struggled with land loss and debt, which heavily influenced the parables and social messages Jesus shared.

Scholars view first-century Galilee as a world of extreme economic disparity, where a tiny elite controlled the vast majority of resources while most people lived near or below subsistence levels.

Social Classes

Sociologists generally divide the era into three broad strata, though some argue the “middle class” was virtually non-existent or very narrow.

  • The Upper Class (Top ~1-2%): Consisted of the Herodian royal family, high priests in Jerusalem, and Roman-appointed officials. These aristocrats and wealthy landowners held most of the political and economic power, often living in luxury in cities like Sepphoris or Jerusalem.
  • The “Middle” or Artisan Group (~10-15%): A diverse group including merchantsskilled craftsmen (like stonemasons or jewelers), and religious leaders like Pharisees and scribes. While they were financially independent compared to peasants, they were still far removed from the ruling elite.
  • The Lower Class (~85%+): The vast majority of the population.
    • Peasants: Small farm families, many of whom were tenant farmers working land owned by others.
    • Laborers: Skilled and unskilled day laborers who often lived “on the verge of starvation”.
    • Marginalized/Outcasts: Included beggars, orphans, widows, the disabled, and social outcasts like tax collectors (despised for collaborating with Rome) and prostitutes

Common Occupations

Daily life was defined by grueling manual labor and specialized trades:

  • Farming and Herding: The dominant way of life. Farmers grew wheat, barley, grapes, and olives. Shepherds tended sheep for wool and goats for milk.
  • Fishing: Thriving communities around the Sea of Galilee caught fish using nets, which were then often dried or salted for trade.
  • Building (Tekton): This Aramaic/Greek term describes Jesus and Joseph. It typically referred to a general builder or artisan who worked with stone, wood, and metal. In a region where wood was scarce, their work was predominantly stonemasonry.
  • Artisans: Specialized workers in towns included potters, weavers, blacksmiths, and leatherworkers who crafted essential household and agricultural tools.
  • Domestic Work: Women primarily managed the home, which involved grinding grain, baking bread, weaving cloth, and fetching water.

What Does The KJV Bible Say?

The economy in the time of Jesus, as depicted in the King James Version (KJV) of the Bible, was primarily agrarian and highly stratified, operating under the heavy taxation and authority of the Roman Empire. A rigid social structure existed with wealthy elites and a large population of poor peasants and laborers, who were often vulnerable to debt and land loss.

Key aspects of the economy mentioned in the KJV include:

  • Agriculture and Labor: Farming and herding were central to the economy. Most people worked the land, often as tenant farmers for wealthy, absentee landlords.
  • Occupations: A variety of skilled and unskilled occupations are mentioned, including carpenters (Jesus and Joseph, Matthew 13:55, Mark 6:3), fishermen (Peter, James, and John, Mark 1:16-20), tax collectors (Matthew, Luke 5:27), and merchants. The Apostle Paul was a tentmaker (Acts 18:3).
  • Monetary System: Coins were in common use, including Syrian, Roman, and Jewish currencies. Jesus refers to a day’s wage as a denarius in the parable of the vineyard workers (Matthew 20:1-16).
  • Taxation: The Roman government imposed a heavy tax burden, collected by publicans who were often corrupt and held in contempt by the Jewish people (Luke 3:12-13, Luke 19:2).
  • Debt and Poverty: Economic pressure was constant, and debt was a major issue, sometimes leading to slavery.
  • Temple Economy: The Temple in Jerusalem served as a major financial center, with money changers and merchants operating in its courts (Matthew 21:12-13; Mark 11:15-17; John 2:14-16).

This is a major important point about forgiveness

Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift. -MATTHEW 5:24 KJV

Are You Your Own Worst Enemy?

I would start out by saying what Jesus Christ would want us to do? Pray and how should we pray? The Lord’s Prayer, and how often should we pray? Continually. Why do we use the Lord’s Prayer and not some other? The Lord’s Prayer covers all the areas that is important for our spiritual being.

When we pray the Lords prayer we ask to forgive our enemies, let God’s will be done, the kingdom to come. By praying the Lord’s prayer we let go of many thoughts we have in our head and give them back to God so we can have things revealed to us.

We must overcome resentment in our heart, and in a past video I shared about Dr. Jordan Peterson talks about how resentment can destroy us and we become our own very worst enemy and Jordan goes on to say that we must talk to people what we have resentment toward to overcome that resentment. Other people who lived in the past who talked about this is Jesus Christ and someone who is living now who talks about this daily is Brother Augustine, Dr. John MacArthur, Dr. Charles Stanley, Rev. John Piper and Pastor Paul Washer.

Women are looking for a fathers love

Women are looking for a fathers love. Its important that men understand women are looking for a fathers love and not get screwed. Woman more than anything are looking for a strong spiritual man to lead the future (the family). I think in many YouTube videos on biblical teachings, how young women are being hurt by men that are just looking to get laid instead of doing right and being in Christ and setting a good example of a strong man. We must be in Christ, hate no one, love all, forgave theses we resent, love what is right and support people who are walking with God.

Women need their fathers in their lives to be strong man to be good examples and not BETA men or weak examples of what a man should be. Its important that a man leads the way as Christ leads men, we as man need to fellow Jesus Christ to keep society from going to HELL.

Every day you can see or people watch how some men and women our living in hell without the right spiritual order then you will continue your hellish way according to 2 Peter. You can also find it in Romans. God will give you over to a reprobate mind.

And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient. – Romans 1:28 (KJV)

In Romans 1, Paul refers to something known as a reprobate mind. If you’re not familiar with the term reprobate, the literal definition in the Greek is failing to pass the test, unapproved, counterfeit.

How God Commands Us To Forgive Those Who We Have Resentment Toward.

All of us are tested everyday by our personal internal struggle coming from resentment of what happened earlier in our lives as children typically what our mother did to us, telling how our fathers were not good enough or driving us away from our fathers when we were children. We most go to the people that we have resentment against and forgive them. By forgiving our mothers or whoever we have resentment against, God will forgive us and we can return to the heavenly Father through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

It was said if you don’t love everyone then you love no one. People today live like the Old Testament people did. We must forgive and love everyone as God Commanded us to do according to Matthew 22:34-40.

In a world where it is so easy to forget the importance of God, we must remember that He is holy and will not share His glory. America has forgotten this truth and it is time for us to re-examine our relationship with God and recognize that He is the one true God who deserves our full devotion and reverence. We must remember that He will not be taken lightly or ignored, but rather should be honored as the Creator of all things. Only then can we truly experience His love and grace in our lives.
