What Difference Between Fundamental Christianity And Liberal Christianity?

What Difference Between Fundamental Christianity And Liberal Christianity?

I have often been asked if there is a litmus test for determining whether a church or person or organization is liberal theologically. I have also often been asked if there is a litmus test for determining wither a church or person or organization is fundamentalist.

I begin by answering that not every church, person or organization is either one. Most people who ask me for these litmus tests know that. The reason they ask is that they want to avoid both and that is not as easy as it used to be. Very few churches, persons or Christian organizations label themselves “fundamentalist.” Does that mean they aren’t? Very few churches, persons or Christian organizations label themselves “liberal.” Does that mean they aren’t? No is the answer to both questions.

Many fundamentalists label themselves “conservative” or don’t use any label. Many liberals label themselves “progressive,” but everyone wants to be progressive in some way or other. Many churches, people, organizations call themselves “moderate” or “centrist” or something else equally vague when they are asked to identify their theological posture.

Another confusing factor is that there are many “churches” that have never been truly Christian in any historical-classical sense of the word but are “sects” or even “cults”—theologically speaking. But, of course, no one thinks they belong to a “sect” or a “cult.”

*Sidebar: The opinions expressed here are my own (or those of the guest writer); I do not speak for any other person, group or organization; nor do I imply that the opinions expressed here reflect those of any other person, group or organization unless I say so specifically. Before commenting read the entire post and the “Note to commenters” at its end.*

The fact is that there is no litmus test that works with everyone all the time. Discerning which churches, people, organizations that claim to be Christian are really counterfeit Christian and which are rooted in genuine Christianity but have become fundamentalist or liberal is a process of discernment.

First, I tell my interlocutor, the person seeking my help with this discernment process, to find and examine the church’s or person’s or organization’s statement of faith. It may not be labeled as such and it may be more implicit than explicit. But there is always something about beliefs on the church’s or person’s or organization’s web site. If not there, it can be found somewhere. As I said, it may be implicit and needs to be drawn out through conversation.

I suggest that my seeker simply ask for the church’s, person’s, or organization’s statement of beliefs. If they say “We [or I] don’t have one” that is the beginning of concern that it, he or she may be liberal. But not always. Some fundamentalists claim to be “Bible only” and have “no creed but the Bible.” I have never found this to be true. If nothing else, a sermon series will reveal its untruth—unless the preacher just quotes the Bible from the pulpit without any interpretation.

So, jumping over many important questions and answers, here is one way I discern between liberal and fundamentalist types (both are “ideal types” rather than closed categories):

Typically, liberals do not think doctrine is very important to authentic Christianity and allow a great deal of latitude about beliefs when it comes to explaining what true, authentic Christianity means to them. They tend to treat Christianity as an ethical system only and that usually means “peace and justice”—both cut loose from any intimate connection with doctrines such as the incarnation or the Trinity or salvation (except defined as liberation from oppression and empowerment of marginalized groups and individuals).

Whats the difference between a fundamentalist christian and a liberal christian?

Looking for an answer to the question: Whats the difference between a fundamentalist christian and a liberal christian? On this page, we have gathered for you the most accurate and comprehensive information that will fully answer the question: Whats the difference between a fundamentalist christian and a liberal christian?

Linking fundamentals to the Christian faith was first presented with the publishing of Noah Webster’s original 1828 dictionary as follows (2): “FUNDAMENTAL”, n. A leading or primary principle, rule, law or article, which serves as the ground work of a system; essential part; as the fundamentals of the Christian faith.”

Because of these central beliefs, evangelical views upon social issues will remain conservative to biblical teaching. Christians must share have these core evangelical beliefs, and the world may identify such churches as evangelical. However, salvation is in the name of Christ and no other (Acts 4:12; 10:43).

In Christian and non-Christian circles, you often hear the words fundamentalist or evangelical used to describe Christians. Often, people refer to those who are in megachurches as evangelicals. Likewise, people often refer to Christians whom are staunch in their beliefs as fundamentalists.

Fundamentalists tend to treat some system of theology as the gospel itself and that can be discerned when they decline Christian fellowship or cooperation with any Christians they consider “tainted” by “bad theology” which amounts to heresy (to them).

What is a non fundamentalist Christian?

Non- fundamentalist Christians might respond by embracing an interpretive freedom as the proper approach to the Bible (seeing much of it as metaphorical or symbolic, for example), which would theoretically allow them to avoid the conclusion that other scriptures contradict, and perhaps actually disconfirm, the Bible.

Is Bob Jones University A Christian Fundamental University?

During the Fundamentalist-Modernist controversy of the 1920s, Christian evangelist Bob Jones Sr. grew increasingly concerned about what he perceived to be the secularization of higher education and the influence of religious liberalism in denominational colleges. Jones recalled that in 1924, his friend William Jennings Bryan had leaned over to him at a Bible conference service in Winona Lake, Indiana, and said, “If schools and colleges do not quit teaching evolution as a fact, we are going to become a nation of atheists.” While he himself was not a college graduate, Jones grew determined to found a college, and on September 12, 1927, he opened Bob Jones College in Panama City, Florida, with 88 students. Jones said that although he had been averse to naming the school after himself, his friends overcame his reluctance “with the argument that the school would be called by that name because of my connection with it, and to attempt to give it any other name would confuse the people”.

Bob Jones took no salary from the college and helped support the school with personal savings and income from his evangelistic campaigns. Both time and place were inauspicious. The Florida land boom had peaked in 1925, and a hurricane in September 1926 further reduced land values. The Great Depression followed hard on its heels. Bob Jones College barely survived bankruptcy and its move to Cleveland, Tennessee in 1933. In the same year, the college also ended participation in intercollegiate sports. Nevertheless, Jones’s move to Cleveland proved extraordinarily advantageous. Bankrupt at the nadir of the Depression, without a home, and with barely enough money to move its library and office furniture, the college became in thirteen years the largest liberal arts college in Tennessee. With the enactment of the GI Bill at the end of World War II, the need for campus expansion to accommodate increased enrollment led to a relocation to South Carolina.

Though he had served as Acting President as early as 1934, Jones’ son, Bob Jones Jr. officially became the school’s second president in 1947 just before the college moved to Greenville, South Carolina, and became Bob Jones University. In Greenville, the university more than doubled in size within two years and started its own radio station, film department, and art gallery—the latter of which eventually became one of the largest collections of religious art in the Western Hemisphere.

During the late 1950s, BJU and alumnus Billy Graham, who had attended Bob Jones College for one semester and received an honorary degree from the university in 1948, engaged in a controversy about the propriety of theological conservatives cooperating with theological liberals to support evangelistic campaigns, a controversy that widened an already growing rift between separatist fundamentalists and other evangelicals. Negative publicity caused by the dispute precipitated a decline in BJU enrollment of about 10% in the years 1956–59, and seven members of the university board (of about a hundred) also resigned in support of Graham, including Graham himself and two of his staff members. When, in 1966, Graham held his only American campaign in Greenville, the university forbade any BJU dormitory student from attending under penalty of expulsion. Enrollment quickly rebounded, and by 1970, there were 3,300 students, approximately 60% more than in 1958.

In 1971, Bob Jones III became president at age 32, though his father, with the title of Chancellor, continued to exercise considerable administrative authority into the late 1990s. At the 2005 commencement, Stephen Jones was installed as the fourth president, and Bob Jones III assumed the title of chancellor. Stephen Jones resigned in 2014 for health reasons, and evangelist Steve Pettit was named president, the first unrelated to the Jones family.

In 2011, the university became a member of the Transnational Association of Christian Colleges and Schools (TRACS) and reinstated intercollegiate athletics. In March 2017, the university regained its federal tax exemption after a complicated restructuring divided the organization into for-profit and non-profit entities, and in June 2017, it was granted accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

This is a major important point about forgiveness

Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift. -MATTHEW 5:24 KJV

Are You Your Own Worst Enemy?

I would start out by saying what Jesus Christ would want us to do? Pray and how should we pray? The Lord’s Prayer, and how often should we pray? Continually. Why do we use the Lord’s Prayer and not some other? The Lord’s Prayer covers all the areas that is important for our spiritual being.

When we pray the Lords prayer we ask to forgive our enemies, let God’s will be done, the kingdom to come. By praying the Lord’s prayer we let go of many thoughts we have in our head and give them back to God so we can have things revealed to us.

We must overcome resentment in our heart, and in a past video I shared about Dr. Jordan Peterson talks about how resentment can destroy us and we become our own very worst enemy and Jordan goes on to say that we must talk to people what we have resentment toward to overcome that resentment. Other people who lived in the past who talked about this is Jesus Christ and someone who is living now who talks about this daily is Brother Augustine, Dr. John MacArthur, Dr. Charles Stanley, Rev. John Piper and Pastor Paul Washer.

Women are looking for a fathers love

Women are looking for a fathers love. Its important that men understand women are looking for a fathers love and not get screwed. Woman more than anything are looking for a strong spiritual man to lead the future (the family). I think in many YouTube videos on biblical teachings, how young women are being hurt by men that are just looking to get laid instead of doing right and being in christ and setting a good example of a strong man. We must be in Christ, hate no one, love all, forgave thoses we resent, love what is right and support people who are walking with God.

Women need their fathers in their lives to be strong man to be good examples and not BETA men or weak examples of what a man should be. Its important that a man leads the way as Christ leads men, we as man need to fellow Jesus Christ to keep society from going to HELL.

Every day you can see or people watch how some men and women our living in hell without the right spiritual order then you will continue your hellish way according to 2 Peter. You can also find it in Romans. God will give you over to a reprobate mind.

And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient. – Romans 1:28 (KJV)

In Romans 1, Paul refers to something known as a reprobate mind. If you’re not familiar with the term reprobate, the literal definition in the Greek is failing to pass the test, unapproved, counterfeit.

How God Commands Us To Forgive Those Who We Have Resentment Toward.

All of us are tested everyday by our personal internal struggle coming from resentment of what happened earlier in our lives as children typically what our mother did to us, telling how our fathers were not good enough or driving us away from our fathers when we were children. We most go to the people that we have resentment against and forgive them. By forgiving our mothers or whoever we have resentment against, God will forgive us and we can return to the heavenly Father through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

It was said if you don’t love everyone then you love no one. People today live like the Old Testament people did. We must forgive and love everyone as God Commanded us to do according to Matthew 22:34-40.
